I am loved

This year's mother's day/birthday celebration was a little bittersweet. We found out Sunday that Nathan's great-aunt died after battling MS on Sunday, and he was taking a plane out to Amarillo on Monday, which was my b-day. So it felt a little strange to celebrate, but my boys still spoiled me nonetheless.

Ethan painted the above watercolor for me in his art class. Aren't the colors beautiful? They also gave me this awesome Jonathan Adler vase that I've been pining for the last couple weeks. It has two faces on it:

a girl side

and a boy side.

And to top it all off, Nathan also got me an hour massage at a spa! I'm going on Saturday.

I love my boys!! I'm truly blessed to have such a wonderful family!

We make lists

100_1609

Yes, we love to make lists around here. Frankly, I'd forget what I was supposed to do throughout the day if I didn't list it, and it seems that the habit has reached Ethan. I'll find him making little lists throughout the week. The latest one states: 1. target, 2. karate, 3. write book. I love the fact that he feels that he must make a list of these things.

Nathan's list in the picture pertains not to activities, but to music and books he hears about. And my lists are always about the things I'm wanting to accomplish that day. Happily I've crossed out all the things on my to do list today, as Nathan's been at work, and Ethan's at a friend's house. It's been a long time since I've had to much time to myself, I'd almost forgotten what it was like.

And it felt great to mark that last thing off the list.

I'm so excited for this film!

We took Ethan to see Monsters vs. Aliens on Saturday, and saw the preview for "Where the Wild Things Are".  Besides the awesome facts that they used an Arcade Fire song, the film looks really great.

I love the old-school feel of using actual puppets for the wild things.  And I love this poster!  I want one for my house!!  Or maybe for my classroom, since I read the book to my kindergarteners (and they seem like wild things sometimes).  I'm more psyched about this film than Ethan, who doesn't really want to see it with me.  I don't think he realizes how scarey it's going to be.

Ethan's 10th birthday

Ethan turned 10 on Monday. 10!! This is unreal to me - I can remember being 10, and thinking it was so cool to call myself a "decade" old. I knew this day would come for Ethan, but I didn't really think it'd happen so quickly. Ethan had told me that he didn't want a big birthday party, just something with him, Nathan, and me. So with that in mind, I started putting a little party together.

What's a party without some balloons and cupcakes?

Ethan blowing out the candles. We broke the rules and had cupcakes before the birthday dinner. We were hungry and those cupcakes from Cupcake Corral just looked too good.

He received some great present this year from family. We bought him a little safe for his allowance and other treasures, Mom and Dad got him Lego Batman for his Wii, as well as a board game and Rachel bought him Tombstone on DVD, his most favorite movies. I love it when Ethan quotes Doc Holiday.

This is a letter I had written for Ethan from the World's Smallest Postal Service. You tell them what you want in the letter, and they transcribe it onto a tiny letter and put it in a tiny envelope sealed with a wax seal. They then send it to you in the regular mail in a larger envelope with a magnifying glass. A special note for a special day!

Ethan said it was his greatest birthday yet, and I was so glad he said that. Tomorrow we're taking Ethan on a trip to Washington, D.C. Nathan's the only one who's ever been, so we thought this would be a good time to visit. I can't wait!!!
